Pregnant mothers beware!

That was one of the headlines on the news on 94.7 yesterday evening on the way home from work (which incidentally took forever because of the power cuts so I heard the story a few times… but that’s not what this post is about).

Anyway, the news story basically said that police have issued a warning to pregnant mothers and teenagers to check the credentials of their doctors before getting treatment.   So then, I listened closely.

The newsreader went on to explain that the police had raided a building in the JHB inner city and found an illegal abortion clinic and shut it down.   The full story is here.

Now I hate the fact that women and girls are victimised by these savages… however, for the police to issue a daft statement like that, is just plain… well… daft!

How is the average woman on the street supposed to get this information?  It’s not like it’s readily available?  In fact, I don’t even know how to check doctors credentials.  And I’m a literate and well-educated person who is employed and does have access to resources.  Just makes me cross.  How can you make a statement like that, and then not provide some kind of solution?

Wow, that is really odd.

And horrible now that I have read the story.

It was probably a knee jerk reaction.

Good point. I have often wondered that myself. Even here in the USA where information is even more readily available.

I do find our media has a way of over sensationilizing (if there is such a word) Probably not the police that said it- but the interpretation of the journalist.

I hear ya. How does one find that stuff out? Thankfully I have a woman doctor that I’ve had most of my life and C&L will have for theirs…but still…an abortion clinic? Those girls are vulnerable enough as is. Sick.

It made headline news even here!!! Apparently the clinic was being run but Ugandans….the nation is SO ashamed!

But yes - Madi is right…SA media WAYYYYY over sensationalises stuff.
