Doctors bills

I went to the dermatologist today.  Finally.  I’ve been putting it off for years.  I have moles you see, all over my body (ok it’s not that bad, but it’s bad).  And I have been a bit worried as they changed a lot during my pregnancies.  But, I was too chicken to go because I was always damn pregnant or trying to get pregnant.  And I have no excuses left now, so I just went.

He did a mole scan of all of them, and gave me a clean bill of health!  YAY!

But, he did mention that I need to see him in a few months (after I get the mirena), to have my face seen to.  I’m 35 damnit!  I should not still get acne.  I’m convinced that this bout that I’m struggling with is due to stress, so I’m praying it’s going to clear.  But anyway, for the first time in my life, I’m considering the Roaccutane he suggested.  You see, I’m not going to be pregnant again, so there’s no risk there… and I’m so damn sick of my skin now.

Anyhoo, when I was paying the enormous bill, I didn’t comment like the other patients obviously do (I’d worked out how much it was going to cost beforehand); because the receptionist piped up with this story…

She went to lunch with friends of hers and her friend had no qualms paying R400 for lunch for herself and 2 kids, but had moaned the whole lunch date about paying R400 for her gynae bill.  She then went on to add that she finds people’s attitude about the value of service maddening.  That doctor probably helped save her life for that price, and she was moaning about it.

And it struck me that she was right.  We moan all the time about how much doctors cost.  But, really, in truth, it’s not that bad considering the service you’re getting from them.

So, I’m not going to moan about the money at all.  I am going to have better sleep tonight, knowing that I don’t have skin cancer.

Yay for not having skin cancer.

And I feel you on the skin. I have pretty good skin over all, but when I was pregnant I had THE worst skin ever. So bad, that I doubt I will ever post photos of it, and I hate having to look at the photos of when Amy was small.

Way to go on the clean bill of health. Man, you should come to Canada! Health care is free of charge. Well, we pay monthly premiums if we aren’t covered by our employers, but it is still a very good system!

But you are right in the end…it doesn’t matter what it costs to sleep better at night over your health.

I also have plenty of moles and had a very aggressive skin cancer removed in 2005. The scar is so big, it looks like a shark bite on my leg. I have to get my moles checked every six months now… Better safe than sorry!

You are so right! We pay a fortune for our niceties and begrudge the necessities!
