Be sensible or splurge?
According to my tax consultant, I’m getting money back from SARS! YAY! And it’s quite a nice amount! Nevermind that this is still the 2007 tax stuff which he’s only just submitted… not my fault… I gave the stuff to him months ago.
And I must admit… I’m sooo tempted to buy a DSLR (a fancy schmancy camera for those who don’t know). I want the Canon 400D, I know it’s the baby of the range, but I’m not sure I can justify the expense of the 40D. OMW, I just saw that the 450D has been launched! Now what? I’m sure it’s not going to be available in South Africa for a few months though.
I really want to do a photography course now, and get better at photography, and I need a SLR camera for that. Yes, I’m still using a point-and-click – ok, it’s a good one – but it’s still a point-and-click.
Hmmm… camera… vs… paying off debt? I should really do the latter. I really should.
Speaking about photography, I’m taking photos of a colleagues baby on Saturday afternoon! Can’t wait to play around. But, I must say that now the date is looming, I’m quite nervy about it. Even though it’s just a practice thing for me… I still want her to get some good photos. I really hope I can find my photo mojo that day!!

ooh tough decisions! I really don’t know what I’d decide. It would be a great thing for you to buy, and it’s money you weren’t really expecting (so you wouldn’t have been expecting to pay off debts with it right?), but then I know how horrible a feeling it is to let debts build up and wish I’d been better ‘behaved’ with my cash. lol
Yay for large tax refunds!! Have fun splurging!
Sorry, but OH MY GOD you take THOSE PICTURES with a point-and-click?
(suddenly overcome by your talent.)
Now I’m even more impressed by your photos. I just assumed you were already using a fancy schmancy camera.
While we were on the cruise we bought me a fancy camera. I got an Olympus E-510. It scares me to death. I really have to find a class to take just to learn to properly use this camera.
Ooh: we bought the Canon 400D for work and it’s a beauty. I’m coveting one myself.
Vvvvv tough decision.
Ooooh, new toys? That is so tempting
You deserve it!!!!
OOOOOH money! Oooooooh a new camera! Life sounds good.
Where do you plan to buy your camera?
Online or at a physical shop?
If you weren’t expecting anything back then I think you should use the money on something you want like the camera. You really enjoy photography and you will get many hours of good use from it so it’s something worthy that the money will go too.
Why don’t you get the 350D instead, it’s just as good and much cheaper?
Since I’m an accountant lol Give your accountant slack. It’s not our fault that stuff have been submitted so late this year. It’s SARS going on to the e-filing system. Just saying
okay…so first I want to say that I have a fear of spending money, and buying a DSLR was one of the hardest decisions to slurge for me EVER.
So I am wondering…if you could pay off some debt, and safe the money you would be sending to pay the debt each month until you have enough for the camera. by then….the 450 might be in South Africa.
Whichever you do…I hope you have peace with it. I struggle so much with decisions like this.
oh and what point and shoot you using? I loved my point and shoot.
I like Corey’s idea. It’s responsible, and you still get your camera.
I have a 400D, and I luuuuurve it. A great photographer like you will coax beautiful pictures out of it!
I absolutely love my 400D!
As for photography…the photographer a camera does not make. You prove this! Your photos are mint, Jenty~~
Splurge splurge splurge!! Do something for YOU!!
