The web and my photos

Bengal Tiger cubI’ve been wondering this morning whether I should investigate selling some of my photos… and how to go about doing it.

I got an email this morning from a news service asking to use my tiger cub photo on their site. It’s a Web 2.0 news service. They seem to trawl the net looking for photos, they then ask to use them and you post your story about it too. I was in 2 minds whether to post the photo there, but decided that I’ve got nothing to lose really.
The photo is already on Flickr and Blogger. And I’ve got the watermark on it.

There’s no way that someone would be able to get the original photo data from it either. The way that I do the framing removes the photo data, so they would not be able to see when it was actually taken or which camera was used.

As far as the framing topic is concerned, I was going to change the way I frame the photos just so that the data could be kept. But I’ve changed my mind. Des, has recently had an altercation with a commenter on her blog who downloaded her photos and then compared the data and questioned her work!! Not that there was any reason to doubt her work, because the textures she’d used had masked the data.

But anyhoo,  what was mind blowing, was that within less that five minutes, the photo had 35 views already!

Oooh, and I also want to investigate Pbase.  I got sent the link by a colleague who thinks I need to post photos there too.

Sometimes the power of the .net worries me, but I’ve also got this ego thing going, and I’m proud of my work, and I want people to see it.

Ok, now I’m just rambling again… over and out!

I’ve been thinking about selling my photos too. I say go for it- what do you have to lose?

I totally understand both feelings, being cautious with your work on line, yet wanting to show it off.

I say go for it, start out small, get your feet wet, and then see where it takes you:)

I know of some people who sell their prints on Etsy.com. Maybe that’s an option too?

How totally cool! You are a true talent and I’d certainly love to hang a picture of yours on my wall.

Very cool that they recognised your talent!

Hey Jen,

This is brilliant news - congratulations and good luck with it all. I’ve been wondering for some time why you don’t get something back for all the effort you put in.

Congrats on the news thing. :)

I’ve toyed with selling my photos as well, but….I get all wigged out, and never do anything about it.

could you describe how you frame your photos to hide your data? thanks!

Wonderful that you are getting some recognition babe! The paid work is on the horizon, I can feel it!

Jent’s - you should contact Getty - they’re always looking for good stock stuff. I think they only pay you when the stuff gets used/bought, but they supply a lot of the ad agencies etc. Better than sitting on the net not earning a thing! Go for it!

It’s a beautiful pic!!! congrats :)

Congrats on them using your photo.

I’ve been looking for ways to sell my photos too. I’ve recently started with a microstock company. I’d like to join more once I get the hang of this one. There are a bunch out there, if you search microstock, you can also find some blogs and groups about them too. Here’s the link to the one I joined http://www.bigstockphoto.com/?refid=OuEJXTCdVn

Good luck!

It is a beautiful pic, and as you already know I love your photos.

One of my friends in Port Elizabeth sells her photo’s on istock. But I am not sure how much control you then lose over them. She has made quite a bit and last month got a check for over 100 dollars (convert to rands and woo hoo)
